Anchor Boys

If your son is free on a Friday evening and like to meet friends, play games and learn all in a fun environment this is where he should be if you are in the Giffnock area.

This page is a generic page and will not contain any personal or calendar references.  If you register as a user of this web site you will be given a password to access a closed area.  In that area will be dates of events and updates about what is happening.

Anchor Boys have lots of fun doing different activities which include making things, crafts, music, games, sports, stories, going on visits, making friends, and working towards their badges.

The award programme for Anchor Boys is specifically designed to encourage Boys to look beyond themselves.

The object of the Boys' Brigade was set by Sir William Smith, the founder, in 1883

"The advancement of Christ's Kingdom among Boys and the promotion of habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline, Self-respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness."

It's as relevant today as it was then and a standard by which we encourage all Boys to achieve.

We are always delighted to welcome new members so come along and see why the Adventure begins here at the 86th. If you are a parent or adult who would like to help we would be delighted to hear from you.

The Anchor Boys meet on school Fridays and have  - 'a fun night for all'

All sections take part in District and Battalion events and competitions throughout the year.

If you are having a gloomy boring Friday Night and are a Boy in this age range living in Giffnock why not come along and see why the adventure begins at the 86th. Don't miss out - come along now and see for yourself!

What do they do?

The Anchor Boys form the youngest section in the BB and is for Boys aged between 5 and 8.

They have lots of fun doing different activities which include making things, crafts, music, games, sports, stories, going on visits, making friends, and working towards their badges.

All of this is done as part of a balanced programme that is separated into 5 different zones . . .

  • Body - fit for fun
  • Mind - think and do
  • Spirit - God and me
  • Community - me and my world
  • Creativity - make and do

Everything a Boy in the Anchor Boys does helps him to develop and to think for himself, in a safe environment.

Why the Anchor Boys?

Boys of this age are developing rapidly. There are big changes in a child's mental, emotional, social and physical development. However, all Boys are different and have a variety of needs. The relationships formed with Boys at this age can be important in assisting them to achieve a sound sense of personal and group identity. The programme will provide a wide variety of different activities including:

  • Learning new skills: the dexterity required for arts and crafts, following simple instructions for games and activities

  • Developing confidence: given opportunities to do things for themselves, praise for good behaviour, taking part in simple role-play, mime and drama

  • Developing physical skills: co-ordination games, hopping, skipping and balancing games

  • Developing independence: being given simple choices of activities, short trips and visits

  • Developing a group identity: belonging to a group, going on trips as a group, taking part in group activities

  • Developing an awareness of the needs of others: learning to share and co-operate

  • Developing a personal identity: learning about how we are all different, looking at the different needs and interest of others

And most importantly . . .opportunities for fun and enjoyment for all BOYS.

Subscriptions

As you might expect as a charity we cannot exist without support.  Parents are asked to contribute by donating £50 for Anchor Boys, £50 for Junior Section , £60 for Company and Senior Section with reduced rates for more than one brother in the Company.

This amount is requested early in the session as in the main part it is used to pay the BB National and District Capitation fees. We provide an annual set of accounts and it can be seen over the last few years that despite prudent spending the subscriptions are barely enough and do not provide extra for outings etc.

Parental assistance with transport  etc is greatly appreciated. We may have to seek further support financially for any outings planned outwith the Halls e.g swimming, sports etc.

HAVE YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO HELP AT THE ANCHOR BOYS

As always we are on the lookout for full and part time leaders to augment our great team of leaders. Our leaders do a great job and  if you have been a member of the BB in the past or any other youth organisations you will no doubt recall the good experience that you had. No doubt your time there helped shape your life in some way.

When Sir William Smith founded the BB in 1883 he too had to ask for volunteers.  If those people had not felt the call none of the success of the BB worldwide and locally would have happened. Indeed if Lord Baden Powell had not helped at the BB he may never have felt like forming the Scouts!!

This is a call to YOU and if you feel challenged and would like to assist in any small way at the 86th BB we would be delighted to hear from you.

Remember you do not need any special training nor do you require to be specially skilled we just need your time and personality.

If you feel you could be tempted to come and help either for a number of weeks or longer  please email us at bb-at-orchardhill.org.uk.  (substitute -at- with @ This is to prevent spam) or simply come along to the Anchor Boys one night to see and hear the fun the Anchor Boys are having.
