During informal evenings (7.30pm – 9.15am) in the Renfield St. Stephen’s Church Centre, Bath Street, Elders, new and not so new, Pastoral Visitors and any interested members of the Congregation, are invited to come along and take part in an enjoyable experience.  Please contact Ian Cartlidge (571 7839) so that your name can be registered with the Organisers.

 Wednesday 2nd “A” Giffnock Brownies

After hearing a talk on the work of the Beit Trust Cure International Hospital in Malawi, the Brownies filled smartie tubes with their pocket money and raised £105, enough money to buy 15 Bibles for this hospital specialising in children’s orthopaedics.  Carriage costs were £80 and rather than reducing the number of Bibles to be sent, the Brownies wondered if anyone in the congregation would like to help support the cost of posting the Bibles.  If so, please get in touch with Fiona Carmichael, 638 2555, as any help would be much appreciated.

 Easter Breakfast – 4th April at 9.00am

Our Easter Breakfast will take place at 9.00am on Sunday 4th April followed by our Celebration Service at 10.30am.  Volunteers are required.  If you can assist with the catering please contact Anne Barr 638 1216.

 FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT

Fairtrade Fortnight is about getting more people talking about and buying Fairtrade and we want you and our church to be involved. For Fairtrade Fortnight this year

(22 February – 7 March) we want everyone in the UK swapping for Fairtrade. Your usual bananas for Fairtrade bananas, your usual cotton socks for Fairtrade cotton socks, and most of all your usual cuppa for a Fairtrade cuppa. Each and every swap proves that the people of the UK want producers in the developing world to get a fairer deal.

Orchardhill is one of nearly 6,000 churches in the UK have met the goals to become a Fairtrade Church.  By being a Fairtrade Church we received a certificate to display to tell people we and all our organisations have made a commitment to Fairtrade.

The three goals our church must continue to fulfil are:

  • Use Fairtrade tea and coffee after services and in all meetings for which we have responsibility
  • Move forward on using other Fairtrade products such as sugar, biscuits and fruit
  • Promote Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight and during the year through events, worship and other activities whenever possible.

Haiti

We've all been horrified by the visual evidence on our televisions of the extent of the destruction and human suffering wrought by the earthquake in Haiti. Yet we've also found ourselves uplifted by the stories of survivors rescued from the rubble against all odds, and by the outpouring of generosity around the world -- even if the gigantic scale of the devastation means that logistical problems are causing not all of the aid to reach those who need it yet. As the world responds to the earthquake, we at Orchardhill will dedicate our Communion Service Sunday, 14 March to reflect on and pray for the people of Haiti and to take up a retiring offering for the ongoing humanitarian effort in the country.

Preparation for Bereavement Fellowship Group  - Sat. 27th February

A Bereavement Friendship Group has been working at Mearns Kirk for over a year, serving those in the area of Newton Mearns who have lost loved ones, and it is hoped to set up a similar group in Giffnock, based at Orchardhill, to offer friendship and a listening ear to those in our community, regardless of background, who are finding it difficult to come to terms with bereavement.

Those who are already involved in pastoral care should note that a preparatory meeting has been arranged for Saturday 27th February 2010, between 9.30am and 12 noon in the Fellowship / Session Rooms, and that the Rev. Joe Kavanagh and Beth Seymour will be among the speakers.

An invitation is extended to all in the congregation who would be prepared to befriend the bereaved, probably one evening per month, to come along to the preparatory meeting to join the Pastoral Care Group. A similar invitation is being extended to Park Church, Giffnock South Church, and Giffnock United Reformed members.

In order to estimate numbers for catering purposes, please let Ian Cartlidge (571 7839) know if you are able to attend.
